Knitter on Skates

And *finally* some SKATING content (mostly frustrated rambling)

Posted by Gina on Monday, September 1, 2008

I created this blog with the intent of giving ample amount of space to both skating and knitting.  This obviously hasn’t been the case, heh.  The very valid, yet mindnumbingly mundane reason is… I haven’t been skating.  I’ve gone skating maybe four times this year?  All four times were at the skating rink during open skate sessions.  Wooo!  Don’t get me wrong, it was fun.  But, do you really want to read about it?  “Today, I skated in circles over and over again while bad music played over the speakers.  I took the occasional break during rink games, such as ‘the limbo’, ‘hokey pokey’, and ‘four corners’.”  Okay, okay, I know I could have blogged about techniques I worked on.  I could have blogged about falling on my azz and making a complete fool of myself.  I could have complained about the rental skate quality (or lack there-of).  But, honestly, my skating sessions were so inconsistent that it really wasn’t worth blogging about.  This will soon change!  (There.  You have it in writing.  Now it has to change soon!)

I’m motivated (again) by the upcoming Kansas City Roller Warriors tryouts.  I don’t have the time to devote to being a full fledged team member, but I am seriously interested in becoming a ref (less of a time commitment, and less out of pocket expenses).  I considered this option last year.  I almost did it, too.  But, I couldn’t get over the “all or nothing” mindset I’ve had since the very first time I got the roller derby idea in my head (and then failed miserably at the 2007 tryouts).  This time around, I will go to the skating clinic this fall.  I need the experience.  I need the motivation.  At that time, I will discuss with the necessary person/people what I need to do to become a ref.  Between now and then, I will make it a point to skate whenever and wherever I can (but not at the expense of my family).  These are the goals I am promising to myself.  I need this (well, not roller derby specifically, but something similar).  I need the social outlet that knitting (my only “real” hobby) has yet to provide.  I need the aggression outlet (not that I’m aggressive, but still… some people jog to literally run off steam.  Some people drive.  Some people lift weights, do yoga, jump rope, etc…  Whatever it takes to get them out of the house for their “me” time).  That’s what I need.  An outlet away from home.  If it turns out the roller derby isn’t in the cards for me, even as a ref, then I’ll come up with a plan b.  For now, this is what I’m going to focus on.

This weekend, I’ll dust off my skates and go to the skating rink.  Or maybe the park, if I can find my outdoor wheels.

Have some cake!

Posted by Gina on Monday, May 19, 2008

Courtesy of Charm City Cakes:

This one was created for the Charm City Roller Girls.

And then there’s the knitting cake.  I don’t know what the story is, but it seems kind of obvious (a knitter is having a birthday?  Call it a hunch).

I don’t even like cake, but these make me wish I did!

Knock Down Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby Track

Posted by Gina on Tuesday, March 4, 2008

I see that a lot of people happen across my blog while searching for roller derby knitting patterns. To the roller derby knitters, I found something you might be interested in: Knock Down Knits: 30 Projects from the Roller Derby Track by Toni Carr. I can’t wait for the release date!

With its rowdy atmosphere, fast-paced jams, and heart-stopping pile-ups, roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the nation. This book will feature 30 hip designs by the Naptown Roller Girls of Indianapolis, who are aggressive skaters and avid knitters. Projects include an on-the-move felted skate bag, Dill and Brownie’s beer saver, and an arm sling. Other fun, derby-inspired patterns will appeal to innovative knitters searching for truly unique patterns as well as derby girls and their legions of fans.

Toni Carr (Indianapolis, IN), known as Joan of Dark #5 when she’s skating with the Naptown Roller Girls, is a passionate knitter and crocheter. Toni has appeared on the DIY show Uncommon Threads. She and her team have filmed an episode of Knitty Gritty that is scheduled to air on the DIY network in spring 2008.

Another source for those looking for Roller Derby patterns (both knit and crochet) is the Hard-Hitting Knitters group on Ravelry. If you’re not already on Ravelry, jump on the waiting list! Don’t wait for the site to be open to the public, as there’s a really good chance you will get your invite before it’s open.

Happy reading!

Let the roller derby season begin!

Posted by Gina on Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Is anyone else excited? The Kansas City Roller Warriors kick off the season at 7pm on March 9th. I’ll be watching from the sidelines again this year. I didn’t try out after-all, but I am (finally) at peace with being just a spectator. The practice schedule doesn’t fit into my life right now, and because I have two very little ones at home, I’m not about to start rearranging things for any sport. Some day, though… Until then, I’ll be frequenting the open skate sessions at the skating rinks, and enjoying roller derby bouts comfortably seated far away form the hard hits.

In somewhat related news ramblings, I’ve been thinking that this city needs a speed skating club. Anyone interested in forming one (in a year or two)?

New speed skates, please?

Posted by Gina on Thursday, November 29, 2007

Look what I’m getting!!!! The Labeda G-80 Silver Streak. I tried on a pair, and they’re so very comfy. Yes, they’re shiny and flashy, but I love them anyway! The flashiness adds to the fun. And I will very much be traveling back to the 80’s by putting purple wheels and pom poms on them. *giggles* My current skates hurt my feet (breaking them in didn’t help). Rentals are more comfortable. Figure skates are more comfortable! ACK! But I refuse to pay for rentals when I own my own, so my feet suffer in silence. I love to skate, and right now, skating hurts. This is a problem. I’m really excited about having a fun and COMFORTABLE pair of skates! It feels like being 7 years old and finding the perfect Christmas present under the tree. :-)

I was going to get myself a new camera for Christmas, but the skates will be more fun. (I found my old camera, by the way. Just need to find the USB cable – is that what it’s called? – so I can upload the pictures to my computer) .

In knitting related news, I think I’ve managed to salvage the soaker. It will be oddly structured, but functional (too lazy to frog and start over). More on that later….

Roller Derby – Tryouts? And some videos..

Posted by Gina on Monday, November 19, 2007

It was requested that I post more about roller derby. This one’s for you. ;)

It’s old news, but I’m still thrilled about it. Congrats to the Kansas City Roller Warriors for winning the 2007 WFTDA National Championship!

Tryouts for KCRW are coming up quickly. The closer they get, the less enthusiastic I feel. I haven’t had much time to practice and get in shape. I’m seriously considering not trying out this year. Part of me wants to, even though I ‘know’ I won’t make it. It’ll be a learning experience, right? And it’ll show that I’m interested and maybe help me score some brownie points for when I am ready. I did try out last year, and what I gained from that experience has been carried with me thus far (just need time to practice!). How much more can I learn *without being accepted* this time around? Another lesson in humility? Sounds oh so tempting /sarcasm. Maybe it will be worth it. Another option I’ve been considering is becoming a ref. Refs don’t need as much skating ability (and some refs don’t skate at all). It would be a good way for me to get some skating experience, while learning the ins and outs of roller derby in preparation for the 2009 tryouts.

Decisions and self doubt. They don’t go hand in hand. While I’m trying to make up my mind, here are some videos of KCRW – the 2007 champions – in action. The second video is of my absolute favorite skater – Snotrocket. She’s awesome! The videos pale in comparison to watching KCRW and Snotrocket live, but they’re still fun:
